Remote work: why are companies calling us back to the office?

Season one: Episode six

Headshot of Emma Taylor

In the last episode of Phoenix Out Loud season one, we’re exploring the future of workplaces with our Culture and Organisational Development Manager, Emma Taylor.

Accelerated by the pandemic, billions of people worldwide began working from home. Since then, many organisations have introduced remote working options, seeing the benefit in giving employees greater flexibility, time, and trust.

However, some organisations have followed in the footsteps of a few larger, influential corporations in asking employees to come back into the office full-time, or with strict hours. This episode weighs up the pros and cons when it comes to remote working, looking at why some companies are insisting on office-based working despite the benefits remote working presents to both organisations and employees.

  • According to the World Economic Forum, global digital jobs are estimated to grow by around 25% by 2030
  • Medium predicts that, in 2025, 70% of the global workforce will work remotely at least five days a month
  • Additionally, Buffer’s State of Remote Work 2023 report found that 98% of remote workers would recommend remote work to others

Let’s explore the future of remote work, looking into both the negatives and positives of continuing on the path to more flexible working.
