On 9th July 2024, SQL Server 2014 is reaching it’s End of Life (EoL) and entering its Extended Security Updates (ESU’s) phase. Ensure you don’t get caught out and explore the steps you need to take before SQL 2014 EoL happens now.

To prevent disruptions and risks to your organisation due to these changes, it’s essential to find a solution before SQL Server 2014 EoL occurs.

This is the time to look into your options and select a solution that suits your organisation and its needs – whether temporary or permanent.

There are several options:

  • Migrate to Azure SQL
  • Migrate your workload to an Azure Virtual Machine to receive free Extended Security Updates
  • Upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server
  • Purchase an Extended Security Updates subscription

Migrate to Azure SQL

For a lasting solution for your servers, switching to Azure SQL means your servers will continue to operate as usual. By using Azure, your organisation will boost innovation, improve security, and remain compliant.

Azure SQL is built on the same engine as SQL Server, which not only means that migration is easier, but the platform is also easy to use. Using the same tools, languages, and resources, Azure SQL has everything you’re familiar with, but more efficient and accessible due to its location in the cloud. Azure is also evergreen, so you never have to worry about updates or EoL again.

Migrate your workload to an Azure Virtual Machine to receive free Extended Security Updates

If SQL 2014 EoL has prompted you to want to move your SQL Server workloads to the cloud without changing much of your code or architecture, you can migrate them to an Azure Virtual Machine.

Azure Virtual Machines are fully compatible with SQL Server, offering free ESU’s. This means you can keep your servers secure and compliant while you plan your modernisation strategy. With Azure Virtual Machines, you can get the best of both worlds: the familiarity of SQL Server combined with the cloud.

Upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server

If your organisation is looking to stay on-premises with SQL Server, you have the option of upgrading to a newer and supported version. With this option, you get a stable environment, access to the newest features, and follow the support cycle of the new version.

For those that are currently using SQL Server 2014, you can upgrade to SQL Server 2016 or SQL Server 2019.

Purchase an Extended Security Updates subscription

If your organisation wishes to stay where it is and continue using SQL Server 2014 in its current form, purchasing an ESU subscription is the way to go.

Eligible customers with Software Assurance under an Enterprise Agreement (EA) can purchase and easily deploy ESU’s through Azure Arc, on both on-premises and cloud environments. As a pay-as-you-go-model, ESU by Azure Arc gives you more flexibility, allowing you to take your time choosing next steps.

Making migration easy

In light of SQL Server 2014 EoL, many IT departments want to know how to migrate with ease. Surveyor 360 can help your organisation see the advantages of Azure for improving your data centre environment and enabling advanced workloads in areas like AI, ML, and IoT.

You have several options to keep your data secure and compliant, whether you want to stay where you are, upgrade to a newer version, or move to the cloud. Whatever you choose, we’re here to help you make the transition as smooth and easy as possible.
